Embracing Leadership

ople together.

The merging of minds is a key factor that makes our world such a diverse and unique one.  One of the things I love about working with entrepreneurial spirited people is their ability to be leaders without even knowing it most of the time.  Their energy for creating and bringing ideas together ignites a spark in those around them.   They really do become a host at most things that they do from personal engagements to managing their businesses.

Think about it in this light – Think back to a party or event you have attended where the host made the entire event a delight to participate in.  Every detail was thought of, from the food to the entertainment.  Most of all it seemed like it was effortless for him or her to take care of the needs of all the guests.  Think about it in the light of those you enjoy doing business with also – who are those people and companies that make doing business with them effortless and pain free.  Something you actually enjoy to do.

While I was in LA this past week I found myself struggling with doing some business with companies that did not get me, or my needs.  In amazement I walked into a cellular telephone store (can you spell V-E-R-I-Z-O-N) to be greeted by two people who asked me to check in at a computer kiosk.  I did and then proceeded to wait for 15 minutes before someone could help me.  This is while there were 8, yes I said 8, employees standing around yakking with each other somehow unable to help me or any other customers waiting to be helped.

When I finally was helped, I really did not get what I needed and here, almost a week later am still trying to work it out with them.  Hardly an experience I would call delightful.  In fact one customer finally exploded while I was there getting helped.  She commented quite vocally at just how insane it was that no one was being helped when there were so many employees standing around.   Sadly, instead of being listened to she was condescendingly talked to and basically ignored.

I bring this up only to outline the importance in leadership of empowering people.  Just imagine if those 8 people had been given the power to help who ever walked through the front door of that store.  Instead of 8 robotic uninterested people there might have been 8 people open and ready to be a “host” to the next “guest” that walked through the front door of that store.
